Santa Rita School
for
Single Particle Cryo-EM

18-30 August 2005

About the School

This Summer school is a hands-on course for learning the processing of single-particle cryo EM data from A to Z. The attendees can be those who are entirely new to the approach, or those for who the technique is of growing importance and who wish to acquire an in-depth understanding of the matter.

The course participants will learn the processing from the first beginning of data collection, through pre-processing, automatic particle picking, alignments, 3D reconstruction, up to the interpretation of the data and fitting of known X-ray structures.

The students are expected to bring along a modern notebook computer (click here for notebook requirements) onto which all necessary software will be downloaded. Most data processing will take place in the context of the IMAGIC software system but other supporting software will be available. Various sample cryo-EM data sets will be distributed for processing during the course. Data sets will range from entirely asymmetric ribosome images to those of icosahedral virus capsids. Students may bring along their own data sets for processing/discussion.

The school will be limited to 25 students. The instructors are all experienced users and programmers of 3D single-particle software. Lecture rooms with LCD projectors will be available, as well as some smaller meeting rooms for data processing. A computer farm will be made available for parallel processing.

The conference site is located close to the beautiful old city of Santa Rita do Passa Quatro which, although in the tropics, has a pleasant ~20º centigrade average temperature in August thanks to its location at 750 m above sea level. The temperature typically peaks at 27º in the afternoon but can drop to 10º at night. Hotel Fazenda Glória has optimal facilities for a school of this size.
